PULL STRINGS
Jason: Hey Mike, congratulations on your new job! I heard it’s the same company that your sister works for.
Mike: Thank you! I’ve wanted to work there since last year and luckily my sister helped me out by talking to some of her colleagues.
Jason: You’re lucky! Your sister must hold a high position at that company or something to get that done for you.
Mike: Luckily, yes. But she still had to pull a few strings to get me this job.
Jason: Well congratulations once again!
Mike: Thank you!

But she still had to pull a few strings to get me this job. 그래도 영향력 있는 사람에게 부탁해서 해준 거야 .” 라고 하더라고요. 그러자 Jason 은 “Well congratulations once again! 아, 그렇구나. 다시 한번 축하해.” 라고 대답하네요. Pull strings 는 ~에게 유리하도록 영향력을 행사하다, 뒤에서 조종하다’ 라는 뜻입니다. 쉽게 말해서 ‘인맥을 동원해서 원하는 것을 얻다’ 라는 뜻입니다. 예를 들어 보겠습니다. Justin’s father has pulled some strings for him.라고 하면 저스틴의 아버지가 힘 써줬다. 라는 뜻이 됩니다.
