Right off the bat
Jake: Hey, I’m here at your apartment but I can’t find any street parking.
Jen: Oh really? Then you can park inside my apartment garage. I’ll get you a guest-parking pass.
Jake: That would be great!
Jen: I’ll just need your license plate number right now.
Jake: Umm…right now? Sorry, I wouldn’t know my plate number right off the bat.
Jen: Then just meet me in front of the main entrance.

Jake가 저에게 “Hey, I’m here at your apartment but I can’t find any street parking. Then you can park inside my apartment garage. I’ll get you a guest-parking pass from the security. 이어서 Jake가 “That would be great! 라고 하자 제가 “I’ll just need your license plate number right now.” Jake가 “Umm…right now? Sorry, I wouldn’t know my plate number right off the bat. 라고 하니까 제가 “Then just meet me in front of the main entrance.

Today’s phrase is right off the bat입니다. Right off the bat means instantly, immediately without delay. Right off the bat는 ‘즉시, 곧바로 또는 아주 처음부터’라는 뜻입니다. 친구가 공항에서 호텔까지 거리가 얼마나 되느냐고 물어보는데 모르겠으면 “I can’t tell you how far it is right off the bat, but I can find out. Here is another example. 처음 본 사람이 따뜻하고 친절해 보일 때 이렇게 말할 수 있겠죠 “I could tell right off the bat that she is a kind person.
