‘Sit tight’ has several meanings. It can mean that you literally remain in place and not move or it can mean that one should wait patiently and await the next move. Sit tight는 ‘자리에서 움직이지 않고 그대로 있다, 동요하지 않고 침착하다’라는 뜻입니다. ‘단단한, 꽉 조여있는’ 이라는 뜻을 가진 ‘tight’앞에 sit이 와서 자리를 옮기지 않고 가만히 있다, 또는 동요하지 않고 침착하다는 의미가 되는 거죠. 책상에 앉아 공부는 안 하고 자꾸 움직이는 아들을 보면서, 어머니가 “Please sit tight and concentrate on your study. 가만히 앉아서 공부에 좀 집중해라.”라고 말할 수 있습니다. 또 동요하지 않다, 침착하다라는 뜻도 있다고 말씀드렸죠. 예문을 들어볼게요. “It is tough to sit tight in time of emergency 긴급한 상황에서 침착하게 행동하는 것은 어렵다." 라는 뜻입니다.
