Christine: Great! Thanks you, I’ll go see him now.

Christine은 Young에게 “Do you have a moment? 궁금한 게 있어서 그런데 혹시 시간 있어?”라고 묻자, Young은 “Yes, sure, what’s up? 응. 뭐가 궁금해?”라고 말하네요. 그러자 Christine은 “I have some questions on my essay, 이번에 에세이 쓰면서especially about the grammar 문법과 관련해서 궁금한 점이 몇 개 있어.” 라고 하더라고요. Essay is a piece of writing on one particular subject. 에세이는 학교 학습활동의 일환으로 제출하는 논문식의 과제물을 말해요. Young 은 “I can help you, but I think it’s best if you ask Dr. Leel. 뭔데? 내가 도와줄게. 그런데 교수님한테 여쭤보는 게 가장 좋을 것 같아. He knows grammar inside out. 교수님은 문법 박사거든.’ 라고 하더라고요.

오늘의 영어 표현은Know (~something) inside out입니다.

When you know something inside out, it means you have thorough knowledge about something. Know (~something) inside out은 ‘손바닥 보듯 (뭔가를) 속속들이 알다, (~) 잘 알고있다’라는 뜻으로, ‘뒤집다’라는 의미를 포함하고 있는 inside out처럼 어떠한 사실을 한쪽이 아닌 여러가지 면에서 빈틈없이 알고 있는 것을 표현하고 있습니다.

There is actually another phrase that you can use to say that you ‘know something inside out’. That phrase is ‘to know (~somebody or something) like the back of your hand’. 또 비슷한 표현으로 ‘know somebody/something like the back of your hand’라는 표현이 있습니다.
