[English with Yoo] To chip in

안녕하세요 English with Yoo! 의 Jennifer Yoo입니다. English with Yoo!

I’ll give you a daily introduction to some meaningful and useful everyday English words and phrases! So let’s get started today!
오늘의 영어 표현은: to chip in 입니다.

There is a saying that blood is thicker than water. I was telling Ebony that families stick with one another and help in rough times. Ebony was going through some tough times financially but her siblings got together and chipped in and helped her out.

To chip in
Jen: Family…family comes first than anything.
Ebony: I always remember that.
Jen: I spoil my baby sister. Are you the oldest?
Ebony: I’m the baby. There are twelve of us.
Jen: You’re the baby! So you get all the attention and you get all the special perks here and there.
Ebony: I was with my sisters today and they found out that I was a little low on my rent so all of them chipped in and I paid the rent off.
Jen: Aww! They chipped in and paid the rent for you?
Ebony: Yeah!

그런데 최근 she found out that she was a little low on her rent, 경제적으로 많이 힘들어서 집세를 내는데 어려움을 겪고 있다고 했는데요, 이 소식을 들은 언니 오빠들이, they chipped in and paid the rent off 했다고 하네요.

오늘의 영어 표현 to chip in 인데요, to chip in (something) means to contribute money for a gift for someone; to pay for part of something with other people.

I was a little low on my rent so all of them chipped in
